Monmouth University’s LGBT Older Adult Project and Trinity Episcopal Church in Asbury Park will host a special Black History month event with the Reverend Gil Caldwell on Sunday, February 24, at 2 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, 503 Asbury Avenue, Asbury Park. The event is free and open to the public.
Using a multimedia presentation and highlighting clips from his documentary Truth In Progress, Reverend Caldwell will draw upon his forty years of experience, activism, and leadership in the civil rights movement of both Black Americans and Gay Americans. Specifically, he will address the issues of race, sexual orientation, and religion, in a fascinating look at the struggles for both black and gay civil rights over the last four decades.
A resident of Asbury Park, Reverend Caldwell has devoted his life to actively working to increase dialogue and address inclusion of all LGBT people in every aspect of church and society. He is a nationally recognized civil and human rights leader, an original member of the Massachusetts unit of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. He is a writer, Methodist minister, and member of the PFLAG National Board of Directors. He was a founding member of RMN Extension ministry United Methodists of Color for a Fully Inclusive Church (UMOC), an organization committed to the full inclusion of LGBT people.
The LGBT Older Adult Project is a joint initiative of the School of Social Work and the Unterberg School of Nursing and Health Studies, and seeks to improve the quality of life of older LGBT adults through education and awareness programs, advocacy, and providing social activities for LGBT older adults, caregivers, and their friends.
