The Monmouth University Physician Assistant (PA) program recently hosted the Simulation and Medical Challenge Bowl at the Linda Grunin Simulation Lab and Learning Center in April.
Kevin Edgeworth, Harry VanWagenen, and Mary Jane Olsen participated in the event as PA students, before their recent graduation, and were joined by current PA students Stevi Greenan, Jaskeerit Singh, Isabella Pecoraro, Hannah Ochinegro, Norhan Gomaa, and Maddie Stein, representing Monmouth. The challenge also featured students from Rutgers University, Seton Hall University, and St. Elizabeth University.
During the event, students answered questions mimicking the style of the Physician Assistant Certification exam and participated in simulation stations, including pediatric, adult, obstetric, standardized patients, and IV task trainers.
Rutgers placed first in the competition, followed by Monmouth, Seton Hall, and St. Elizabeth. The New Jersey State Society of Physician Assistants (NJSSPA) recognized the first and second place winners.
This year’s challenge bowl was spearheaded by Monmouth faculty and staff, including James Fries, PA-C, specialist professor, and Billie McNally, simulation laboratory office coordinator, with support from Pauline Papapietro, PA-C, specialist professor, Dr. Violet Kramer, simulation laboratory medical director, Dr. Robert Massaro, preceptor, and Sarah Abdelhady, graduate assistant. Additional faculty and staff from the participating universities also contributed to the event.
NJSSPA is dedicated to promoting education, advocacy, and partnership to achieve quality, cost-effective health care, in addition to the interests of all physician assistants practicing in New Jersey, and is the official state chapter of the American Academy of Physician Assistants.
