G.I. Jobs, the premier magazine for military personnel transitioning into civilian life, has awarded Monmouth University the designation of Military Friendly School. The 2013 Military Friendly Schools list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade/vocational schools that offer the best support, flexibility and value for active duty military and veterans pursuing an education.
While the list has always been selective, G.I. Jobs raised the bar even higher this year for the thousands of schools competing for the honor. “The competition for our 2013 Military Friendly Schools® list was fierce, and as a result we raised the already stringent criteria to a higher benchmark,” said Rich McCormack, G.I. Jobs publisher.
The list measures the programs and services important to the military community, including a school’s flexibility, veteran student support, academic accreditation, percentage of student veterans, tuition discounts and military spouse policies. A Military Friendly Schools® Academic Advisory Board helps determine the survey questions and weightings.
“Monmouth University is proud to be named a Military Friendly School again this year,” stated Paul G. Gaffney II, president of Monmouth University and a retired U.S. Navy vice admiral. “Military and veteran students are valuable members of our campus community and we appreciate their service to our country, knowledge, and leadership.”
A highlight of Monmouth’s military-friendliness is the Military Bridge Program, which allows students who do not meet Monmouth’s traditional admission requirements to enroll for a transitional semester; students become fully matriculated after earning satisfactory grades.
Another military-friendly program that Monmouth participates in is the Yellow Ribbon Program. In partnership with the Veterans Administration, Monmouth University contributes matching funds to supplement the veterans’ educational benefits to cover the full cost of tuition and fees for veterans who choose to attend a private institution. Monmouth also has an Office of Veterans Services that provides certification, orientation, and support through the many adjustments to college life. The Veteran’s Association, formed by a group of students and a member of the Student Veterans of America, is very active on campus and promotes understanding and awareness for all veterans attending Monmouth University.
