Photography Exhibit by Monmouth Professors Will Travel to Princeton

The Center for the Arts at Monmouth University has announced that part of the exhibit Transition: Vietnam, by Monmouth Professors Mark Ludak and Andrew Cohen, will travel to the Princeton Public Library early next year.

Monmouth Dance Students Participate in a Masterclass With Carolyn Dorfman Dance Company

In November, the Center for the Arts in partnership with Department of Music and Theatre Arts Adjunct Professor Ekaterina Bronshteyn hosted one of four masterclasses scheduled this year with her dance students. The masterclasses are meant to broaden Monmouth students' knowledge of the discipline and skills outside of the classroom and allow them to work with distinguished, professional dancers and choreographers.

Roots-Music Prodigy Comes to Monmouth Campus, in Exclusive Area Concert Appearance

The Center for the Arts at Monmouth University has announced that tickets are now on sale for a March 30, 2018 concert by EmiSunshine, hosted inside the Pollak Theatre as part of the 2017-2018 Performing Arts Series. Presented at 8 p.m., the concert represents the exclusive northeast tour appearance — and a first-ever visit to the Monmouth campus — for a breakout music star who’s barely entered her teens: the 13-year old Americana/ country traditionalist who Rolling Stone branded “mind bogglingly talented,” and whose burgeoning fanbase can claim such discerning music lovers as Emmylou Harris, Ricky Skaggs, and Loretta Lynn.

A Classic Tale With a Twist

Monmouth University's Pollak Theatre opened its doors October 19th to give students from local elementary schools a special performance. The Center for the Arts hosted The Three Pigettes and the Big Bad Lady Wolf , a bilingual show that puts a twist on the classic tale, The Three Little Pigs . The show was part of the Children's Theatre Series.

Suicide Prevention Benefit Concert Featuring the Lords of 52nd Street With Special Guest Matt McAndrew

The Lords of 52nd Street, the legendary members of the Billy Joel band, will bring the famous sounds of the "Piano Man" to Monmouth University in a concert benefiting the School of Social Work's SRF Suicide Prevention Research and Training Project. The Lords of 52 nd Street are excited to be partnering with the SRF Suicide Prevention Project at Monmouth to help bring attention to how to save lives. The band has been personally impacted by the loss of their bandmate, Doug Stegmeyer. Liberty Devitto stated "I miss Doug every day. My hope is that by getting to the kids early, we can prevent this kind of problem for future generations. I hope that our involvement with this show and this great charity, we can get to someone who thinks there is no other option, because there is always another option."

Hair – Department of Music & Theatre Arts to Put on Iconic Musical at Mu

The story of HAIR explores what it means to be a young person in the changing world of the 1960s. With lyrics by James Rado and Gerome Ragni, HAIR became an icon for the anti-Vietnam War movement and a statement for the practice of peace. The show, although set in the 60s, speaks to ideas that remain important social and political topics today. The Department of Music & Theatre's run of HAIR comes as the musical celebrates its 50th anniversary.

Across the Sea – Mariza – Grammy-Nominated Ambassador of Portuguese Fado Music, Visits Monmouth U in November

Hosted inside the refurbished Pollak Theatre, the 7:00 p.m. event is return appearance to Monmouth University by the Portuguese vocalist who performed to a sold-out crowd at the venue 10 years ago. Mariza's appeal straddles both the hyper-current realm of pop stardom and the centuries-old musical traditions of her ancestors. The music is fado, the style of folk balladeering born of the people who worked the land and (especially) the seas in and around the singer's Lisbon home base. As practiced by the late Amália Rodrigues and other regionally popular artists, this voice of the waterfront working people took an often mournful, sometimes joyous view of real-life struggle that was graced with understated instrumentation, romantic verse, folklore, spirituality and, occasionally, a pointed sense of social justice.

Artivism – Call for Entries

As a universal language, the arts have always been an effective tool for addressing social issues. Artivism or “activist art” is a form of social protest that explores cultural and political concerns. However, it is much more than just an innovative tactic, Artivism involves an entire a practice that attempts to inspire positive change in society. Monmouth University’s Center for the Arts is inviting artists to submit works of art that employ spectacle, symbolism and collective participation to fight for issues of social justice including racial discrimination, gender equality, fair labor practices, human rights and more. This includes, but is not limited to: conceptual social sculpture, political poems, utopian films and videos, political rally posters and paintings of “Exuberant Politics.
