Billie McNally gives us a tour of the Linda Grunin Simulation Lab and Learning Center’s Pediatrics Suite.

The Grunin Sim Lab is a cutting-edge training space for Monmouth students in the health care disciplines, replicating real-life clinical environments with high-tech mannequins and equipment. The facility includes four advanced simulation suites (Pediatrics, Maternity, ICU, and Operating Room) with observation areas, standardized patient exam rooms, and a system to capture training data. Billie McNally, who keeps the suites ready for action, gave us a tour of the Pediatrics Suite.

a high-fidelity patient mannequin

Hal

Designed for realistic health care education and training, Hal is a high-fidelity simulator that replicates human physiological responses to facilitate hands-on learning for students. He simulates breathing and heart and abdominal sounds, displays a range of facial expressions, and can even hold full conversations with learners.

Code Cart and Defibrillator

The cart is stocked with a real defibrillator, various medical equipment, simulated medications, and supplies used in emergencies to resuscitate patients experiencing simulated life-threatening events such as cardiac arrest or respiratory failure.

a monitor displaying vital signs

Patient Monitor

Vital signs and EKG data are displayed on a monitor above the patient’s bedside. These readings are controlled by the simulation staff and used by the students to assess the patient’s health, monitor changes, and make decisions about treatment.

a laptop computer

Laptop

The laptop serves as the control center for all of Hal’s functions. Simulation staff implement faculty-designed scenarios, which enables faculty to simulate any medical condition that pertains to their curriculum and adjust Hal’s responses.

Observation Space

Each simulation suite includes an observation area with a one-way mirror, allowing observers to monitor sessions unseen by participants, enhancing the realism. A 75-inch monitor in the space enables replay and debriefing, giving students valuable insights by reviewing their performance.
