Master of Education (M.Ed.) Program Application Requirements
Master of Education (M.Ed.)
- Possession of a baccalaureate degree with an overall GPA 3.0 or higher.
- Two letters of recommendation related to the applicant’s competence for graduate study.
- Essay (500 words or more) explaining why the applicant wishes to pursue this graduate program.
- Resume
- Teaching certification may be required based on program of study.
Early Childhood (Preschool through Grade 3)
- Possession of a baccalaureate degree with an overall GPA of a 3.0 or higher.
- Two letters of recommendation related to the applicant’s competence for graduate study.
- Essay (500 words or more) explaining why the applicant wishes to pursue this graduate program.
- Resume
- Teaching Certificate (If the applicant is not a certified teacher, the applicant must hold an NJ Certificate of Eligibility (CE) P–3 and be employed in a P–3 position requiring certification).
Students pursuing Provisional Teacher Prep Program (alternate route) must submit the following prior to applying to the M.Ed. program:
- 50 hour VOPC-Verification of Completion form.
- Completion of appropriate Praxis II for certification area.
- Employment Contract or Letter. Applicants must be employed as a P3 Teacher of Record, P3 Long Term Substitute, or P3 maternity leave replacement.
- Cumulative CGPA of a 3.0 or better.
- NOTE: holders of a Limited CE P3 must provide passing scores on CORE Praxis #5752, #5025, and have a CPGA of 2.75 or better to be eligible for the P3 programs.
English as a Second Language Graduate Programs
- Possession of a baccalaureate degree with a satisfactory overall GPA per state requirements (see Website for details) and a minimum 3.0 GPA in the undergraduate major.
- Two letters of recommendation for graduate study.
- Résumé
- Personal statement of not more than two pages that describes the applicant’s preparation for study in the program and personal objectives for graduate study.
- Hold a Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing (CEAS), provisional, or standard NJ instructional certificate. If the applicant is not a certified teacher, the applicant must hold an NJ Certificate of Eligibility (CE) ESL and be employed in an ESL position requiring certification.
Students pursuing Provisional Teacher Prep Program (alternate route) must submit the following prior to applying to the M.Ed. ESL program:
- Applicants with a Certificate of Eligibility:
- 50 hour VOPC-Verification of Completion form.
- Completion of OPI and WPT in English
- Employment Contract or Letter. Applicants must also be employed in an ESL role.
- Cumulative GPA of a 3.0 or better.
Applicants with a Limited Certificate of Eligibility are required to complete all of the above and provide passing scores on CORE Praxis #5752.
Bilingual/Bicultural
- Possession of a baccalaureate degree with a satisfactory overall GPA per state requirements (see Website for details) and a minimum 3.0 GPA in the undergraduate major
- Two letters of recommendation for graduate study
- Résumé
- Personal statement of not more than two pages that describes the applicant’s preparation for study in the program and personal objectives for graduate study.
- A degree in a K-12 school curriculum content area other than foreign language or English as a Second Language.
- Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing, or a standard NJ instructional certificate, or a Certificate of Eligibility with a teaching position in an ESL/Bilingual setting.
- A passing score for nationally recognized test of oral and written proficiency in both English and the target language.
Students pursuing Provisional Teacher Prep Program (alternate route) must submit the following prior to applying to the M.Ed. Bilingual/Bicultural program:
- Applicants with a Certificate of Eligibility:
- 50 Hour VOPC-Verification of Program Completion form.
- Completion of OPI and WPT in English and the target language.
- Employment Contract or Letter indicating employment as a Bilingual Teacher of Record, Bilingual Long Term Substitute, or Bilingual maternity leave replacement.
- Cumulative GPA of a 3.0 or better.
Applicants with a Limited Certificate of Eligibility are required to complete all of the above to and must submit passing scores on CORE Praxis #5752 and have a CPGA of 2.75 or better.
TESOL
