Application Requirements

Application Instructions for Graduate Admission

Graduates of colleges of recognized standing, whose records show evidence of ability to do graduate work, may apply for admission. Selection for all programs is based in the student’s ability to do graduate work of high quality as shown by the distinction of the undergraduate record, particularly in the major, scores on appropriate admission tests, and/or other supporting documentation where required. All admission decisions are approved by the program director of the department in which the student plans to earn a graduate degree.

Procedures

  • For individual program requirements, please refer to the complete Graduate Program/Certificate Admission Requirements section on this page.
  • With the exception of your official transcripts, please submit all required supporting documents—including letters of recommendation—electronically through your Applicant Portal. When uploading, make sure your documents are legible and no larger than 1.5 MB.
  • The application for admission must be completed in full and returned, along with the application fee (U.S. dollars only), to the Office of Admission Processing. A non-refundable $60 application fee must accompany all applications.
  • Official transcripts of the undergraduate record, along with transcripts of any graduate work done elsewhere, must be forwarded directly to the Office of Admission Processing.
  • Information regarding the GRE and the GMAT can be obtained from the Office of Graduate Admission or from ETS directly by contacting them at 609-921-9000 or visiting their Web site at www.ets.org. GMAT information can be obtained from the office of graduate admission, www.GMAC.com

Deadlines

The deadline for application for the fall semester is July 15; for the spring semester, the date is December 1; and for summer sessions, the deadline is May 1. Qualified applicants are given consideration after the deadline on a space-available basis.

Discrete program applications: Social Work program July 15 (fall only). Speech-Language Pathology program applicants apply via CDSCAS application and materials are accepted until February 1 (summer-start only). Physician Assistant (PA) program applicants will apply via CASPA; we recommend that applications and materials are submitted via CASPA by September 1 in order to be verified and complete by the October 1 deadline (fall-start only). Occupational Therapy program applicants can apply via the Occupational Therapy Centralized Application System (OTCAS); the deadline is March 15.

The application deadline for MSN and Post-Master’s Nursing programs is July 15 for Fall.

Financial Aid / Payment Plans

Students pursuing a graduate degree at Monmouth University may be eligible for student financial assistance including, but not limited to, student loans, and graduate assistantships. Students who wish to borrow through the Federal Direct Loan program must be U.S. citizens and must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa. For assistance with the FAFSA or information on other, non-federal loans, students should contact the Financial Aid Office at 732-571-3463 or via e-mail at finaid@monmouth.edu.

Graduate assistantships are work in exchange for tuition credit and are awarded through a competitive application process. Interested students should visit www.monmouth.edu/GA or contact the Office of the Graduate Studies at 732-571-7573 or via e-mail at cplantam@monmouth.edu.

The University offers a payment plan for each of the Summer/Fall/Spring semesters ranging from 3 to 6 monthly installments. For additional information about the plans available, please visit the Payment Plans Plus Guide or contact the Office of the Bursar directly at 732-571-3454.

International Students

  • Applicants whose native language is not English must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS). For graduate students, the requirements are: 550 for the paper-based TOEFL, 213 for the computer-based, and 79 for the Internet-based test. In addition to the TOEFL, Monmouth will accept the IELTS with a minimum score of 6, Duolingo English Test with a minimum score of 105, the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB) with a minimum score of 77, or the Certificate of Advanced English (CAE) with a minimum score of a B2. Pearson Test of English Academic-(PTE) with a minimum score of 55, TOEIC with a minimum Listening/Reading score of 700 and a minimum Speaking/Writing score of 7 or 270, or an ITEP exam with a score between 3-7 and 3.9.
  • Monmouth University will also accept international students who meet Monmouth’s regular standards for admission and who have successfully completed any of the following programs with our ESL School Partners in lieu of the TOEFL or other English proficiency exam.

Submit official transcripts in English from all previously attended institutions or an official evaluation from an accredited evaluation service. Transcripts must be translated into English. For required documentation, refer to our Web site or contact the Office of Graduate Admission.

Additional Instructions

CERTIFICATES: Students may earn a certificate without matriculating into a degree program. In most cases the admission requirements are the same as for a degree program. In some cases a certificate may be included as part of a degree program or pursued concurrent with another degree program in an appropriate specialty.

NON-MATRICULATED COURSE WORK ONLY: Student is NOT applying for a program of study. Coursework is NOT permitted in MAT, MBA, MSW, SLP, PA, DNP or PC programs. Limit of 6 credits. Student must send official transcript showing conferral of bachelor’s degree. Additional transcripts may be required to document completion of pre-requisites when applicable.

PERMISSION: Students attending another school who wish to register for a course(s) during the semester must have a letter of permission from the home institution. Additional transcripts may be required to document completion of pre-requisites when applicable.

MASTER OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (M.B.A.): A general M.B.A. that allows customization for your career goals

M.B.A. w/concentrations in *Advanced Accounting, **Finance, Management and Marketing

All M.B.A. programs and concentrations are required to have either of the following:

  • Possession of a four-year baccalaureate degree and either:
  • GMAT* score
  • CPA or CFA licensure
  • Possession of a four year baccalaureate degree with a 3.0 minimum GPA
  • Possession of a master’s or doctoral degree (M.S., M.D., J.D., Ph.D., Ed.D, etc.)

Applicants must also provide:

  • Current Résumé.
  • Essay explaining why the applicant wishes to pursue this graduate program (500 words or less)
  • Two letters of recommendation (optional)

*The Graduate Record Exam (GRE) will be considered as a substitute for the GMAT on an equivalent basis.  LSAT or Engineering certification exams may also be considered. Combined SAT scores may be considered as a substitute for the GMAT for Monmouth University alumni/students.

*Please note accounting students must have the following prerequisites: BA-311; BA-312; BA-401; BA-370 and BA-413; or BA-316 and BA-417, or other equivalents.

**Please note that Finance students must have the following prerequisites: MA-117 Quantitative Analysis for Business I and MA-118 Quantitative Analysis for Business.

School of Education

DOCTOR OF EDUCATION (Ed.D.) IN EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP – P-12 Track

DOCTOR OF EDUCATION (Ed.D.) IN EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP – Higher Education Track

  • All applicants must have an earned master’s degree in education, business, or related field. Official transcripts are required from each institution in which bachelor’s and master’s level credits were earned.
  • Applicants must have a minimum grade point average of 3.25 out of 4, in a nationally accredited Master’s Program.
  • A current resume/curriculum vitae should outline the applicant’s educational background, employment history, professional activities, and other activities that provide support for admission.
  • Two letters of recommendation. These letters should address the applicant’s readiness for doctoral study.
  • Two-page personal statement essay should describe the applicant’s preparation for study in the program and personal objectives for graduate study.
  • Candidates may be selected for an interview by one or more members of the advisory board to determine the candidate’s level of interest, aptitude, and career goals.
  • At or near the time of their interview, candidates may be asked to provide an onsite writing sample to be evaluated by the admission committee.

MASTER OF ARTS IN TEACHING (M.A.T.)

All M.A.T. Programs, Tracks, and Concentrations

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree with a satisfactory overall GPA per state requirements (see NJDOE Website for details) and a minimum 3.0 GPA in the undergraduate major.
    • Subject specific content requirements are different depending on the area of certification.
  • Teacher candidates must pass a basic skills requirement as a part of the admission process. There are two ways to satisfy this requirement:
    • Provide a passing score on the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators. Please visit https://www.ets.org/praxis/nj for guidance on the NJ Praxis tests and passing scores. A test score must meet the current passing score to satisfy the test requirement. Before you register for a test, please confirm your state’s requirements.
    • Provide official qualifying scores on the SAT, ACT, or GRE required for the year in which the exam was taken (see New Jersey Department of Education for details)
  • Two letters of recommendation for graduate study.
  • Résumé.
  • Personal statement of not more than two pages that describes the applicant’s preparation for study in the program and personal objectives for graduate study.

Note: Prior to student teaching, the appropriate Praxis Test must be successfully completed and all content courses and conditions of acceptance must be satisfied.

MASTER OF EDUCATION (M.Ed.)

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree with an overall GPA 3.0 or higher.
  • Two letters of recommendation related to the applicant’s competence for graduate study
  • Essay (500 words or more) explaining why the applicant wishes to pursue this graduate program
  • Resume
  • Teaching certification may be required based on program of study.

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN EDUCATION (M.S.Ed.)

Concentrations in Principal/Supervisor, Principal/School Administrator/Supervisor, Literacy, School Counseling, Student Affairs and College Counseling, and Special Education

Special Education tracks include Teacher of Students with Disabilities (TSD), Learning Disabilities Teacher-Consultant (LDT-C), Supervisor Endorsement, Autism, Autism/ABA, or Special Education – Advanced

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution, with a competitive overall GPA (3.0 preferred, but not required) and an academic record that demonstrates success.
  • Two letters of recommendation related to the applicant’s competence for this graduate program and professional work.
  • Essay (500 words or more);
    • For Principal, Principal/School Administrator/Supervisor, Literacy or Special Education the essay should explain why the applicant wishes to pursue the selected graduate program.
    • Monmouth’s School Counseling and Student Affairs and College Counseling programs are committed to diversity & social justice advocacy and seeks applicants who share this commitment. Please discuss how and why social justice is important to you and how you foresee yourself utilizing this training in your future career as a school counselor or student affairs professional. Please provide examples that may illustrate your awareness of social justice and commitment to becoming a change agent in educational settings and beyond.
  • Applicant must be a certified teacher. (Does not apply to M.S.Ed. School Counseling, Student Affairs and College Counseling, Autism/ABA, or Autism.)
  • Students applying to the M.S.Ed. School Counseling and M.S.Ed. Student Affairs and College Counseling programs must participate in a group interview.
  • Students in the M.S.Ed. Special Education/Supervisor and L.D.T.C. tracks must submit a letter from their administrator stating that they have 3 years of full-time teaching experience in a public or an NJ approved private school for students with disabilities.

Master of Science in Education – Speech-Language Pathology

To be considered for admission, students must complete a Communication Sciences and Disorders Centralized Application Service (CSDCAS)* application at csdcas.liaisoncas.com and also meet the following requirements:

  • An earned baccalaureate degree with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale from all courses at all institutions; A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 in all Speech-Language Pathology prerequisite courses (does not include non-SLP prerequisites, e.g., statistics); and Competitive applicants have GPA’s of 3.3 or better.
  • The applicant must also demonstrate course content in the areas of statistics and biological, physical and social/behavioral sciences in order to meet Standard IV-A of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association. It is required that students complete these courses prior to June 15 for their enrollment in the graduate program. The student must earn a “C” or better in this prerequisite coursework.   • An essay and responses to all questions required on CSDCAS.
  • Two letters of recommendation from those who know the student and can address the student’s ability to complete graduate studies. It is highly recommended that at least one letter is from a current or previous instructor.
  • Once your application has been verified by CSDCAS and imported by Monmouth University, you will receive an email with instructions on how to access your Applicant Portal. Through this portal, you will be able to sign and upload the required Core Functions Acknowledgement Form as well as submit your $60.00 Monmouth University application fee.
  • A professional resume is required.

The Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is not required for application to the SLP program.

*All materials must be completed and submitted to CSDCAS by February 1. We recommend that all required documents be submitted to CSDCAS in December.

Certification Requirements:

Principal/Supervisor: Upon completion, you must provide documentation evidencing completion of five years of successful educational experience under a valid provisional or standard NJ or equivalent out-of-state certificate to be eligible for the endorsement.

Principal/School Administrator/Supervisor: For admission, you must provide documentation evidencing completion of five years of successful educational experience in a public or non-public school, a public or non-public school district, or a regionally accredited higher educational setting in New Jersey or out-of-state.

Literacy: Upon completion, you must provide documentation evidencing completion of two years successful teaching experience to be eligible for the endorsement.

Learning Disabilities Teacher-Consultant (LDT-C): Upon completion, you must provide documentation evidencing completion of three years successful teaching experience with a standard NJ or out-of-state instructional certificate to be eligible for the endorsement.

Special Education with Supervisor Endorsement:: Must be a certified teacher. Note: Applicant must hold a standard New Jersey instructional or educational services certificate or its out-of-state equivalent, and complete three years of successful, full-time teaching and/or educational services experience. Teaching and/or educational services experience completed in a New Jersey public school must have been under an appropriate New Jersey certificate.

Autism: Must be a certified teacher.

EDUCATION CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS:

Applied Behavioral Analysis

Possession of a baccalaureate degree with a 3.0 overall GPA and a minimum 3.0 GPA in the undergraduate major.

Autism

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree with a 3.0 overall GPA and a minimum 3.0 GPA in the undergraduate major.
  • Personal essay (500 words or more) explaining why the candidate wants to pursue this program.

Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

Accelerated Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree with a 3.0 overall GPA and a minimum 3.0 GPA in the undergraduate major.
  • Two letters of recommendation for graduate study.
  • Résumé.
  • Personal statement of not more than two pages that describes the applicant’s preparation for study in the program and personal objectives for graduate study.
  • This Certificate does not lead to the NJDOE ESL Endorsement.

EDUCATION ENDORSEMENT PROGRAMS:

Bilingual/Bicultural

  • A degree in a K-12 school curriculum content area other than foreign language or English as a Second Language.
  • Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing, or a standard NJ instructional certificate, or a Certificate of Eligibility with a teaching position in an ESL/Bilingual setting.
  • A passing score for nationally recognized test of oral and written proficiency in both English and the target language.
  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree with a satisfactory overall GPA per state requirements (see Web site for details) and a minimum 3.0 GPA in the undergraduate major.
  • Two letters of recommendation for graduate study.

Director of School Counseling Services (Post-Master’s)

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree with a satisfactory overall GPA per state requirements (see New Jersey Department of Education for details) and a minimum 3.0 GPA in the undergraduate major.
  • Possession of a master’s degree.
  • Two letters of recommendation related to the applicant’s competence for this graduate program and professional work.
  • Essay (500 words or more) explaining why the applicant wishes to pursue this graduate program.
  • Note: Must hold an NJ school counselor or student personnel services certificate or an equivalent out-of-state certificate. Upon completion, provide documentation evidencing completion of three years of successful experience as a school counselor in grades P–12 to be eligible for the endorsement.

Early Childhood (Preschool through Grade 3)

See M.S.Ed. requirements. (If the applicant is not a certified teacher, the applicant must hold an NJ Certificate of Eligibility (CE) P–3 and be employed in a P–3 position requiring certification.)

ESL and Accelerated ESL

As an endorsement of practitioners in the school districts:

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree with a satisfactory overall GPA per state requirements (see NJDOE Web site for details) and a minimum 3.0 GPA in the undergraduate major.
  • Hold a Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing (CEAS), provisional, or standard NJ instructional certificate. If applicant is not a certified teacher, the applicant must hold an NJ Certificate of Eligibility (CE) ESL and be employed in an ESL position requiring certification.
  • Two letters of recommendation related to the applicant’s competence for graduate study.
  • Essay (500 words or more) explaining why the applicant wishes to pursue this graduate program.
  • Résumé.

May be pursued by those enrolled in Monmouth University’s Initial Teaching Certification Program (MAT), or as a stand alone endorsement.

Learning Disabilities Teacher-Consultant (LDT-C) (Post-Master’s)

  • Possession of a master’s degree in education.
  • See M.S.Ed. requirements.

Student Assistance Coordinator (SAC)

  • Hold a standard instructional certificate, or a school psychologist, school social worker, school counselor, director of school counseling services or school nurse endorsement, or a valid Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor credential issued by the NJ Alcohol and Drug counselor Committee of the Marriage and Family Board, or a valid Certified Prevention Specialist credential issued by the Addiction Professionals Certification Board of NJ or hold a master’s or higher degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Applicant must submit an essay of 500 words or more explaining why applicant wishes to pursue a SAC endorsement.
  • Submit all official undergraduate and graduate transcripts.

Note: Monmouth University students who are pursuing one of the above credentials in #1 can apply to this program and pursue it concurrently with their degree.

Supervisor (Post-Master’s)

  • Possession of a master’s degree.
  • See M.S.Ed. requirements.

Note: Applicant must hold a standard New Jersey instructional or educational services certificate or its out-of-state equivalent, and complete three years of successful, full-time teaching and/or educational services experience. Teaching and/or educational services experience completed in a New Jersey public school must have been under an appropriate New Jersey certificate.

Teacher of Students with Disabilities

Accelerated Teacher of Students with Disabilities

  • Possess or be eligible for a standard or provisional New Jersey instructional certificate with an endorsement appropriate to the subject or grade level to be taught.

Teacher Leadership Endorsement

  • Must possess a New Jersey Standard Instructional Certificate.
  • 3 or more years of teaching experience.
  • A letter from the school district verifying an effective or highly effective summative rating in two of the most recent years of evaluation.
  • One letter of recommendation.

MASTER OF ARTS IN ANTHROPOLOGY (M.A.)

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or University with a minimum 3.0 GPA.
  • Essay (500 words) highlighting personal and/or professional goals and objectives for wanting to pursue graduate study in the field of anthropology.
  • Two professional letters of recommendation from persons familiar with the prospective student’s academic and/or professional competence.

MASTER OF ARTS IN COMMUNICATION (M.A.)

Concentrations in Strategic Public Relations and Social Media and Interactive Digital Media

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree with a minimum 3.0 overall GPA and a minimum 3.0 GPA in the undergraduate major.
  • Two letters of recommendation for graduate study. Letters from current or former professor recommended. If these are unavailable, letters may be sought from current colleagues, or a current or recent supervisor.
  • Personal essay of not more than 750 words that describes the applicant’s preparation for study in the program and personal objectives for graduate study
  • Digital and/or hard copy portfolio of select samples of work, including a writing sample, that demonstrate initiative and achievement in academic, professional, and/or community settings. For the Interactive and Digital Media concentration please submit a digital portfolio with samples of your creative media, interactive media, transmedia design, computing, and/or  technological projects that highlight and demonstrate your initiative and achievement in academic, professional, and/or community settings.
  • Résumé.

COMMUNICATION CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS:

Graduate Certificate in Public Service Communication

MASTER OF ARTS IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE (M.A.) and

Tracks in Leadership, Intelligence Analyst, Community-Law Enforcement Relations, and Homeland Security (Optional)

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree with a minimum 2.75 overall GPA and a minimum 3.0 GPA in the undergraduate major.
  • Two letters of recommendation for graduate study.
  • Personal essay of 250-300 words that describes your preparation for study in the program and personal objectives for graduate study in criminal justice.

MASTER OF ARTS IN ENGLISH (M.A.)

Creative Writing Concentration

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree with a minimum 2.75 overall GPA, fifteen or more credits in literature or a related field, and at least one course in creative writing is strongly recommended.
  • An application essay of 1,000 words describing your interest in creative writing, what you hope to accomplish in the M.A. program, and how you think the program will fit into your academic and career goals.
  • Two letters of recommendation. Letters from current or former professors recommended; if these are unavailable, letters may be sought from current colleagues, or a current or recent supervisor.
  • A brief creative writing sample: 15 – 20 pages of poetry, fiction, or creative non-fiction.

Literature Concentration, Rhetoric and Writing Concentration

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree with a minimum 2.75 overall GPA, fifteen or more credits in literature or a related field is strongly recommended.
  • An application essay of 1000 words describing your interest in this program, what you hope to accomplish in the M.A. program, and how you think the program will fit into your academic and career goals.
  • Two letters of recommendation. Letters from current or former professors recommended; if these are unavailable, letters may be sought from current colleagues, or a current or recent supervisor.
  • A writing sample in the form of a paper that best represents your academic work.

MASTER OF FINE ARTS (M.F.A.) – CREATIVE WRITING
For students applying for the dual M.A./M.F.A. degree program, Monmouth requires:

  • Possession of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum 2.75 overall GPA, 15 or more credits in literature or a related field, and at least one course in creative writing (strongly recommended)
  • An application essay: 1,500 words describing your interest in creative writing, intent to continue study toward the M.F.A., what you hope to accomplish in the M.A./M.F.A. program, and how you think the program will fit into your academic and career goals
  • A creative writing sample: 15 – 20 pages of poetry, fiction, or creative non-fiction.
  • Two letters of recommendation. Letters from current or former professors recommended; if these are unavailable, letters may be sought from current colleagues, or a current or recent supervisor.

Only students that have an overall graduate GPA of 3.25 at the completion of the M.A. in English Creative Writing program, and have been approved by the program director will continue.

For current or former Monmouth University M.A. in English Creative Writing students applying to the third-year M.F.A. degree program, Monmouth requires:

  • Possession of a master’s degree in English with a minimum 3.25 overall GPA, at least 12 credits in creative writing, and a creative thesis or equivalent
  • An application essay of 1,000 words describing your interest in creative writing, what your hope to accomplish in the program, and how you think the program will fit into your academic and career goals
  • A creative writing sample: 15 – 20 pages of poetry, fiction, or creative non-fiction.
  • Two letters of recommendation. Letters from current or former professors recommended; if these are unavailable, letters may be sought from current colleagues, or a current or recent supervisor.

In either the third semester of the M.A. course of study, or after 18 credits, the M.F.A. candidates will submit an e-form applying to continue into the MFA curriculum, with the Director’s approval.

Students applying for the third-year M.F.A. degree program only:

  • Possession of a master’s degree in English with a Creative Writing Concentration with a minimum 3.25 overall GPA

OR

  • a non-creative writing master’s degree along with a Monmouth University Graduate Certificate in Creative Writing with a 3.25 overall GPA
  • An application essay of 1,000 words describing your interest in creative writing, what you hope to accomplish in the program, and how you think the program will fit into your academic and career goals
  • A creative writing sample: 15 – 20 pages of poetry, fiction, or creative non-fiction.
  • Two letters of recommendation. Letters from current or former professors recommended; if these are unavailable, letters may be sought from current colleagues, or a current or recent supervisor.

Graduate Creative Writing Certificate

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree with a minimum 2.75 overall GPA.
  • Fifteen or more credits in literature or a related field and at least one course in creative writing are strongly recommended.
  • An application essay of 1,000 words describing your interest in creative writing, what you hope to accomplish in the program, and how you think the program will fit into your academic and career goals.
  • A brief creative writing sample: four to five pages of poetry, fiction, or creative non-fiction.
  • Two letters of recommendation. Letters from current or former professors recommended; if these are unavailable, letters may be sought from current colleagues, or a current or recent supervisor.
  • Pathway to the MFA: Students intending to obtain the MFA degree after completion of the Graduate Creative Writing Certificate may use 3 credits of Creative Writing Designated with Course Type EN.CW from their Certificate toward the 18-credit MFA. Students must apply to the MFA program before the completion of the Certificate. The 3 dual-counting credits cannot be used toward any other degree, such as the MA in English.

MASTER OF ARTS IN HISTORY (M.A.)

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree with a minimum 2.5 overall GPA and a minimum 3.0 GPA in the undergraduate major.
  • Two letters of recommendation for graduate study.
  • Written statement that describes the historical areas the candidate wishes to study and details how graduate study will contribute to the candidate’s professional and academic goals.

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN CLINICAL MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING (M.S.)

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree with a minimum 3.0 overall GPA.
  • Two completed Monmouth University Professional Counseling Recommendation Forms.
  • Narrative (four to five pages, double spaced) in response to the questions outlined on the Admission Application Essay Form.
  • Participation in an evaluative group interview.

CERTIFICATE IN PROFESSIONAL COUNSELING

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree.
  • Current enrollment in a CACREP-accredited Master’s program in Counseling or prior graduation from a CACREP-accredited Master’s program in Counseling.
  • Cumulative GPA of a 3.0 in the CACREP-accredited Master’s degree in Counseling.
  • Applicants are reviewed for admission in a holistic manner reviewing their readiness to become a professional counselor, which extends beyond academics to factors including disposition, maturity, and intention for the profession. 

Marjorie K. Unterberg School of Nursing and Health Studies

DOCTOR OF NURSING PRACTICE (D.N.P.)

  • Applicant must be a graduate of an accredited Master’s in Nursing program or a related field (i.e., M.B.A., M.P.H., M.H.A.).
  • Possession of an active RN license.
  • Certification in a specialization is preferred.
  • Must have a minimum of GPA of 3.2 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
  • Currently employed.
  • Statement of vision of her/his leadership role to improve healthcare outcomes.
  • Résumé that includes details of current practice.
  • Two professional and/or academic letters of recommendation.
  • Official transcripts from all previous college work.
  • Current liability and malpractice insurance of $1,000,000 to $3,000,000.
  • After admission, prior to starting classes, students must submit to the School of Nursing and Health Studies a certificate of good health from a primary care practitioner, including a health history and physical examination with associated laboratory studies, immunizations, and criminal background checks in accordance with the special requirements of affiliation contracts with clinical agencies.
  • A telephone or in person interview may be a part of the admission cycle.

DOCTOR OF OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY (OTD)

Post-Baccalaureate Entry Admission Requirements

The post-baccalaureate program allows for students to enter the program after completing their undergraduate degree program.

Applicants are evaluated for admission based on academic preparation; quality of references; insightful goals in personal statement; successful completion of observation hours and academic prerequisites; work and service activities.

  • Bachelor’s Degree – A bachelor’s degree (or US equivalent) must be completed at the time of application or completed by the time the program begins. A degree in any area of study will be accepted.
  • GPA – At least a 3.0 cumulative GPA as well as in the prerequisite courses. (Note: All completed courses will be used in the GPA calculated by OTCAS.)
  • Observation Hours – 60 hours of observation in a minimum of two practice settings must be completed prior to admission to the program. Examples of settings are: adults, geriatrics, pediatric, wellness, LTC, hospitals, community centers, primary care, etc. An OT Observation Form will be provided to complete for each site observed.
  • Completion of Prerequisites – Completion of all pre-requisites with a grade of B- or better. Applicants with outstanding prerequisite courses that are not shown as “in progress” on the OTCAS application. All incomplete prerequisite courses and observation hours must be completed by the time the program begins. 
  • Quality References – Three references are required and can be from academic advisors, licensed occupational therapists, and/or work managers. At least one reference must be from a healthcare professional.
  • Writing Sample – Writing prompt available in OTCAS.
  • Interview
  • Criminal Background Check – Required of all admitted students. Must have prior to first day of class.
  • Technical Standards – Occupational Therapy Program Essential Skills and Standards Acknowledgement.

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT (M.S.)

  1. CASPA Application
    • Applicants must submit a completed Central Application Service for Physician Assistants (CASPA) application.
  2. Technical Standards Acknowledgement Form and Application Fee
    • Applicants must be able to meet the program’s technical standards.
    • Once your application has been verified by CASPA and imported by Monmouth University, you will receive an email with instructions on how to access your Applicant Portal. Through this portal, you will be able to sign and upload the required Technical Standards Acknowledgement Form as well as submit your $60.00 Monmouth University application fee.
  3. Baccalaureate Degree
    • Possession of a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university is required.
    • Applicants not having a baccalaureate degree by the time of the personal interview, if accepted into the program, will automatically fall into an Accepted Conditional status pending completion of their degree but must have degree completed prior to matriculation and evidence of meeting all GPA and prerequisite course requirements.
  4. GPA Requirements
    • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale from all courses at all institutions
    • A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 in all prerequisite courses.
  5. Prerequisite Coursework
    • Successful completion, within 10 years before application, of the following prerequisite courses and associated semester credit hours (sch) with a grade of “C” or better (pass/fail grading is not accepted):
      • Human Anatomy with lab (4 sch) and Human Physiology with lab (4 sch) or alternatively Human Anatomy & Physiology I and II, each with lab and each 4 sch;
      • Chemistry I and II with lab, each 4 sch;
      • Biology I with lab (4 sch) or Biology II with lab (4sch) or Cell Biology with Lab (4 sch);
      • Microbiology with lab (4 sch);
      • General Psychology (3 sch) or Abnormal Psychology (3 sch) or Developmental Psychology (3 sch);
      • Medical Terminology (2 sch minimum): certificate courses and contact hour courses are not acceptable.
      • Statistics or Biostatistics (3 sch): statistics courses within social or natural science departments (e.g., psychology) are acceptable.
      • Advanced Placement (AP) or College Level Examination Program (CLEP) credit for any prerequisite courses is not accepted.
      • Online courses will be considered for acceptance in fulfilling admission requirements.
      • All courses must be completed at a regionally accredited College or University. Applicants who completed coursework from a college or university outside of the U.S. must submit a transcript evaluation from a reputable transcript evaluation service.
  6. English Language Proficiency
    • Students whose native language is not English must provide an English proficiency score meeting the University’s requirements by the time of application.
  7. Direct Patient Care Experiences
    • A minimum of 200 hours of paid or unpaid (i.e., volunteer) direct patient care experience by the time of application (up to 20 shadowing hours with a PA can be included).
  8. Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
    • The GRE, taken in the past five years, is required for all applicants by the time of application.
    • Competitive applicants have scores near or above the 50th percentile in each of the test areas.
    • Your GRE scores can be submitted directly to us through CASPA. Use the Designated Institution Code 3880 and your scores will be included with your application.
  9. Letters of Reference
    • All applicants are required to submit three specific letters of reference via the CASPA system by the time of application.
      • One letter must be from a current or former professor who has taught you in a class.
      • One letter must be from a paid or volunteer work supervisor. This should be someone you report directly to or who can discuss your work ethic and performance. Letters from coaches are not counted as fulfilling this requirement.
      • One letter must be from a clinician.

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN INFORMATION SYSTEMS (M.S.)

Tracks in Management or Technology

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree with a minimum 2.75 overall GPA and 3.0 in the undergraduate major. Candidates will have earned an undergraduate degree in computer science, software engineering, information technology, information science or business administration or majored in a field that requires a substantial component of software development and/or business administration.
  • Applicants to the Technology track must have completed courses equivalent to Program Development I and II, Management and Organizational Behavior, Principals of Software Engineering, and Data Structures and Algorithms.
  • Applicants to the Management track must have completed courses equivalent to Program Development I, Management and Organizational Behavior, Principals of Software Engineering, Financial Accounting, and Economics for Management.
  • Applicants who have not completed one or more of these courses will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. They may be required to complete foundation courses before entering the program.
  • No letters of recommendation or essay is required.

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN SOFTWARE ENGINEERING (M.S.)

Optional Advanced Thesis or Non-Thesis Track

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree in software engineering, computer science, computer engineering, or another engineering related discipline with a minimum 2.75 overall GPA and a minimum 3.0 GPA in the undergraduate major. Candidates whose major is not computer science or a related field may be admitted on a case-by-case basis.
  • Demonstrate completed coursework in computer programming, data structures and algorithms, and software engineering. Applicants who have not completed coursework in these areas will be required to complete the preparatory/foundation courses as necessary.
  • Thesis track students must hold a bachelor’s degree in software engineering from a college or university accredited by its regional accrediting agency.

School of Social Work

DOCTOR OF SOCIAL WORK IN HUMAN RIGHTS LEADERSHIP (DSW)

Master’s degree: All applicants must have an earned master’s degree in social work or social services (preferred). Official transcripts are required from each institution in which bachelor’s and master’s level credits were earned. Applicants who have a social work degree from outside of the United States must have their degree evaluated by the Council on Social Work Education.

  • For applicants with a master’s degree outside of social work, please contact the DSW Program Director for further information. Applicants will have to complete four core MSW courses in social work before entrance into the DSW:
    • SW-503 Social Work Practice with Individuals and Families or SW‑513 Social Work Practice with Groups or equivalent
    • SW-518 Global Community Practice or equivalent
    • SW-627 Implications of Social Justice and Human Rights
    • SW-669 Applications of Social Justice and Human Rights

Please note, SW-627 and SW-669 must be taken at Monmouth. Both courses are offered online.

Grade Point Average: Applicants must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 out of 4 in a nationally/globally accredited master’s program.

Resume/Curriculum Vitae: A current resume/curriculum vitae should outline the applicant’s educational background, employment history, professional activities, and other activities that provide support for admission.

Three letters of recommendation: These letters should address the applicant’s readiness for doctoral study.

Personal statement: Please describe in 1,000-1,500 words how past and current professional experiences have prepared you for pursuing a doctoral program in human rights leadership at this time. Please include the long-term professional goals that cultivated your interest in human rights leadership.

Interview: Candidates may be selected for an interview by one or more members of the admission committee to determine the candidate’s level of interest, aptitude, and career goals.

Writing sample: At or near the time of their interview, candidates will be asked to provide a writing sample to be evaluated by the admission committee.

Post-Graduate Experience: Applicants are expected to have at least 3-5 years post-graduate professional work experience before undertaking doctoral work.

Note: Transfer Students

Students who wish to transfer into the DSW program can transfer up to two courses with a B or better from their current or past (within five years) doctoral program. Students would need to submit their doctoral syllabi to the DSW Program Director along with a justification as to how these courses fit with the Monmouth DSW curriculum.

MASTER OF SOCIAL WORK (M.S.W.)

Concentrations in Global and Community Practice, and Clinical Practice with Families and Children

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree with a preferred minimum 2.75 overall GPA and a minimum 3.0 GPA in the undergraduate major. If you have a GPA below these requirements, you are still encouraged to apply.
  • Three completed Monmouth University School of Social Work recommendation forms found in the online graduate application.
    Recommendations must be submitted by professional references, and not by friends or relatives.
  • Narrative (four to five pages, double spaced) in response to the questions outlined on the online graduate application. Your essay should provide a reflection on your academic experiences and readiness to succeed in graduate education.
  • Candidates for Advanced standing must have completed their BSW within the last six years.
  • In instances where the admissions committee has questions about an applicant’s references, personal statement, or academic record, the applicant may be required to attend an interview as part of the admissions process.

SOCIAL WORK CERTIFICATE PROGRAM:

Play and Expressive Therapies (Post-Masters)

  • A master’s degree in a medical or mental health discipline (ex: MSN, MSW, MA), and eligibility for licensure in that discipline.

Graduate Certificate or Clinical Social Work Licensure

  • Applicants must have a completed MSW degree from a CSWE accredited program and be a licensed Social Worker to enter this certificate program.
