Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students

Welcome to the Monmouth County Guidance Director Association’s annual Fall College Fair! The college search and selection process is exciting for families; college fairs can often be the first step. They provide excellent opportunities to meet with representatives from various schools to identify programs, gather information regarding financial aid offerings, and determine your level of interest. Whether you are a junior narrowing down your list or an underclassman just starting to explore, use your time tonight to identify schools you might want to visit in person.

As you walk through the OceanFirst Bank Center, reviewing the many options available—think about the following questions: In what majors am I most interested? Is there a particular geographical area within which I would like to stay? Will I be most comfortable and successful at a large school? small school? somewhere in between? What activities and programs are most important to me? While the schools’ websites can provide you with information regarding size, programs, and activities, the face-to-face meeting with admissions representatives provides a more personalized “real” presentation of the “experience” of the school. The representatives are highly knowledgeable—ask them many questions. Finally, keep track of the answers you receive—take notes, keep a journal, make a chart—and share them with your school counselor, a valuable resource for guidance when making your final college decisions.

Once you have narrowed your list using online programs, college “best of” books, the college fair, and most importantly, your school counselor, you will be ready to explore the colleges firsthand—visiting the campus and perhaps even sitting in on classes! The journey from search to selection can be a fantastic adventure—approach it with forethought, planning, and an open mind, and the path will lead to the best college match for you.

Special thanks to Monmouth University for hosting this event and to our “Help Table” volunteers. Without their efforts and support, this regional college fair would not be possible.
