Hosted by Dean Kenneth Womack, the series will be convened at the University’s LakeHouse Studios space and attendees will enjoy the opportunity to interact with some of the most exciting and vibrant artists of our times.

    Todd Davis is a celebrated poet of the natural world. The winner of the Gwendolyn Books Poetry Prize, he is the author of five poetry collections, including his latest book, Native Species.

    May Pang is an American music industry veteran, perhaps best known as Beatle John Lennon’s girlfriend during the early 1970s. She is the author of two books, including Loving John and Instamatic Karma.

    Glen Burtnik is a multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter whose work includes hit singles for the likes of Don Henley and Patty Smyth. During his storied career, he has played with such bands as Styx, The Orchestra, and, most recently, The Weeklings.

    Jack Ford is a Peabody and Emmy Award-winning journalist. His latest novel is Chariot on the Mountain, the true story of a runaway slave’s extraordinary dash towards freedom in the Old South’s pre-Civil War years.

  • Frontline Paper

    *Formerly known as Combat Paper NJ

    Exhibit of created works will be displayed on October 4th following the reading in Pollak Theater.

    All veterans have a story to tell. For too long, we have lived in a day and age where veterans tend to suppress their experiences – producing a culture of the “silent veteran”. Frontline Paper (formerly known as Combat Paper NJ) is a unique art project that offers artistic tools and professional instruction for all, providing a space to use art and writing to explore experiences, and ultimately share them publicly, all through papermaking.

    Frontline Paper’s specialty is the transformative process of making handmade paper from military uniforms. This handmade paper, created through public workshops, provides a platform for veterans and non-veterans to come together to share stories and generate a “new language” and much needed conversations.

  • The Lavender Scare

    The Lavender Scare; Film and discussion with Filmmaker Josh Howard & Historian David Johnson

    The Lavender Scare is the first documentary film to tell the little-known story of an unrelenting campaign by the federal government to identify and fire all employees suspected of being homosexual. In 1953, President Eisenhower declared gay men and lesbians to be a threat to the security of the country and therefore unfit for government service. In doing so, he triggered the longest witch hunt in American history.

  • Life, Death, Life Again: Children Sentenced to Die in Prison

    Life, Death, Life Again: Children Sentenced to Die in Prison is a verbatim theater piece by Elizabeth Weill-Greenberg, that shares the stories of four people sentenced to die in prison for violent crimes committed as children, and a victim’s grandson who chose to lead with forgiveness. Each performance will be followed by a facilitated discussion on the themes discussed in the play – radical forgiveness and how we can create a more humane criminal justice system.

    Featuring: Turron Kofi Alleyne, June Ballinger, Shavonna Banks, LaChrisha Brown, Brian O’Neill, David Seamon

    This performance is presented by coLAB Arts, and supported by The MU Center for the Arts with the Department of Political Science and Sociology, Department of Criminal Justice, and the School of Social Work at Monmouth University.

    ‘Leaves you bobbing on a wave of happiness’ Independent

    Alan Bennett’s sharp and hilarious new play is ‘just what the doctor ordered’ (Daily Telegraph). Filmed live at London’s Bridge Theatre during its limited run, don’t miss this acclaimed production full of ‘singalongs and stinging wit’ (Guardian).

    The Beth, an old fashioned cradle-to-grave hospital serving a town in Yorkshire, is threatened with closure as part of an efficiency drive. A documentary crew, eager to capture its fight for survival, follows the daily struggle to find beds on the Dusty Springfield Geriatric Ward, and the triumphs of the old people’s choir.
    One of Britain’s most celebrated writers, Alan Bennett’s plays include The History Boys, The Lady in the Van and The Madness of George III, all of which were also seen on film. Allelujah! is his tenth collaboration with award-winning director Nicholas Hytner.

  • Wynonna & The Big Noise

    Respected by the millions of fans who are drawn to her music and undeniable talent, Wynonna’s rich and commanding voice has sold over 30-million albums worldwide spanning her remarkable 34-year career. As one-half of the legendary mother/daughter duo “The Judds,” Wynonna was once dubbed by Rolling Stone as “the greatest female country singer since Patsy Cline.” This iconic performer has received over 60 industry awards, with countless charting singles, including 20 No.1 hits such as “Mama He’s Crazy,” “Why Not me,” and “Grandpa, (Tell Me ‘Bout The Good Ole Days).”

    Wynonna and her band The Big Noise, led by her husband/drummer/producer, Cactus Moser, released their debut full-length album in February 2016 via Curb Records to critical acclaim. Wynonna has described the new sound as “vintage yet modern” and a “return to the well.” It’s a rootsy work encompassing country, Americana, blues, soul and rock. The album features special guests Derek Trucks, Jason Isbell, Susan Tedeschi and Timothy B. Schmit. NPR’s Ann Powers noted that, “With her tight band behind her after touring together for several years, she just sounds like she’s home…You can just feel the grin on her face.”

  • Catapult – Children’s Show

    A season 8 finalist on America’s Got Talent, Catapult captivates audiences with its shadow dancing and the ability of the troupe’s dancers to transform their bodies into seemingly impossible images. Not only is the show packed with hundreds of shape transformations, but it is full of humor, emotion and engaging stories. The Catapult dancers work behind a screen to create dancing shadow silhouettes of shapes from the natural and built world. Be amazed as you watch their bodies transform into a mountain, an elephant, a dragon, even a helicopter!

    This is an abbreviated 1 hour performance for children and school groups. The full performance will take place later that evening at 8 PM. Children are welcome at both events! More information on that event here.
