  • Klimt & Schiele: Eros and Psyche

    Klimt & Schiele: Eros and Psyche, recounts the start of the Vienna Secession, a magical art movement formed in the late 1890’s for art, literature and music, in which new ideas are circulated, Freud discovers the drives of the psyche, and women begin to claim their independence. It was a movement that marked a new era outside the confines of academic tradition.

    At the heart of Secession were artists Gustav Klimt and his protégé and dear friend Egon Schiele. This exhibition proves an in-depth examination fo images of extraordinary visual power: from the eroticism of Klimt’s mosaic-like works, to the anguished and raw work of the young Schiele in his magnetic nudes and contorted figures against the backdrop of nocturnal Vienna, full of masked balls and dreams imbued with sexuality.

  • Caravaggio: The Soul and the Blood

    Take an immersive journey through the life, works and struggles of the Italian master Michelangelo Merisi di Caravaggio. Roberto Longhi, a Caravaggio expert, explores in the artist’s masterpieces the echo of personal experiences and the expression of the human state, both physical and emotional. These evocative moments — thanks to the use of light and cinematic techniques — allow viewers to go deep inside the mind and soul of Caravaggio, empathizing with his impulses and fears.

  • Van Gogh: Of Wheat Fields and Clouded Skies

    Take a fresh look at Van Gogh through the legacy of the greatest private collector of the Dutch artist’s work: Helene Kröller-Müller (1869-1939), one of the first to recognize the genius of Van Gogh. In the early 20th century, Kröller-Müller amassed nearly 300 of Van Gogh’s paintings and drawings now housed at her namesake museum in Holland.

    The Basilica Palladina exhibition in Vicenza, “Amid Wheat Fields and Clouded Skies,” with 40 paintings and 85 drawings on loan from the Kröller-Müller Museum, lends the basis of this program, revealing Van Gogh’s art and his genius, while allowing audiences to understand the importance of drawing as part of his craft.

    Van Gogh’s seemingly instinctive canvases were the result of long, preparatory studies very rarely exhibited – not just sketches but stunning works of art in and of themselves, where the broken flow of lines that characterize the style and strokes in Van Gogh’s paintings can already be seen.

  • Springsteen on Broadway

    Monmouth University, along with the Bruce Springsteen Archives and Center for American Music housed at the university, in partnership with Netflix, will hold a free, public screening of the film “Springsteen on Broadway” on Sunday, Jan. 13 at 4 p.m. in Pollak Theatre.

    Ticket reservations for the screening are available online and are required for entry. Limit of two reservations per guest. Admission of registered guests will begin at 3 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis; seats are not guaranteed. Non-perishable food items will be accepted in support of The Nest, Monmouth University’s food pantry for students in need and Fulfill (formerly the FoodBank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties) will also be accepting monetary donations.

    The film screening will feature an extended introduction by Emmy Award-winner Thom Zimny, director and producer of the film. “Springsteen on Broadway” documents Bruce Springsteen’s one-man autobiographical Broadway show following its sold-out run at the Walter Kerr Theatre in New York City that concluded on Dec. 15. The film launched globally on Netflix on Dec. 16.

    In addition, from noon to 3pm on the 13th in the Guggenheim library the Students Curate Bruce Springsteen Exhibit will be on display.

    Born into the world of art and design, Mike Quon learned the ropes early on from his father who was an art director and an animator and promotional artist at Disney working on classics like Dumbo and Fantasia. After graduating from UCLA School of the Arts, Mike launched his own career as an art director at J. Walter Thompson and Young and Rubicam before establishing his award-winning design office in New York City 30 years ago. Since then, Mike’s bold and bright promotional illustrations for advertising and editorial campaigns, his graphic design collateral and packaging, and his hand-crafted logos have been seen around the world, helping to promote events like the Summer Olympics and build lasting brand identities for consumer products, businesses and nonprofits.

  • Songs & Stories featuring James Dalton & Friends

    James Dalton gathers together a cast of wonderful singer songwriters and musicians, focusing heavily on local and independent, to take the “in the round” model up a notch. Audiences will not only get an intimate portrait of the artists and stories behind the songs themselves, but they will experience onstage collaboration and interplay as the whole cast supports, accompanies and jams with each other. Artists will include: James Dalton, Steven Delopoulos, Michael Ronstadt, Steve Reilly, April Centrone, Andy Keenan, Tara Dente, Karlee Bloom and more to be announced soon!!

    As a universal language the arts are a very effective tool for addressing social issues. The #metoo movement has brought to the surface long ignored injustices perpetrated mostly against women for generations that are finally screaming to be remedied. This juried exhibition will feature works that eloquently depicts remedies, that teach us how to honor women and others who have been maligned, how to implement change within our culture, to alter perceptions and ultimately excise this malady for future generations.

Academy Award® nominated actor Chazz Palminteri returns to the stage in an unforgettable performance after a successful run on Broadway, where it was praised by the critics and adored by the public. In A Bronx Tale, the celebrated one man show on which he based the legendary movie, Palminteri vividly depicts a young boy’s rough childhood in the 1960s-era Bronx and the unforgettable people he encountered. A classic coming-of-age story reaching ones true potential and trusting one’s heart, A Bronx Tale is directed by four-time Tony Award® winner Jerry Zaks.

    Bronx-born and raised Chazz Palminteri was a natural choice to continue the long line of prominent Italian actors in the film industry.  In the tradition set forth in the 1970s by such icons as director Martin Scorsese and actors Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci, Palminteri has brought grit, muscle and an evocative realism to the sidewalks of his New York neighborhood, violent as they are and were.Born in 1952, Palmintieri grew up in a tough area of the Bronx and it gave young Calogero (Palminteri’s given first name) the life lessons that would later prove very useful to his career. He started out pursuing his craft in studying at the Actor’s Studio with Lee Straussberg. He appeared off-Broadway in the early 1980s while paying his dues as a singer in his own band.

    Well known for A BRONX TALE, Palminteri originally wrote the script for the stage and performed it as a one-man show in Los Angeles.  It became the hottest property in Hollywood since ROCKY.  Mr. Palminteri was offered over a million dollars to walk away from the project and with $200.00 left in the bank he refused.  He wanted to play Sonny and write the screenplay.  One night Robert DeNiro walked in to see the show and as they say ”the rest is history.”  He then moved the production to New York, where it played for four sold-out months and earned him nominations for the New York Outer Critics Circle for both acting and writing.  While in New York he completed the screenplay of A BRONX TALE and soon found himself starring opposite Robert DeNiro, who chose the script for his directorial debut.  Most recently A Bronx Tale was on Broadway at the Longacre Theater where is finished a successful run and Mr. Palminteri finished closing out the show in the role of Sonny.

    Chazz has more than 50 movies to his credit including The Usual Suspects, Bullets Over Broadway (Academy Award nomination), Analyze This, Hurlyburly, Mulholland Falls, Faithful (screenplay also written by Chazz Palminteri), Poolhall Junkies, The Perez Family, Jade, Diabolique, Down to Earth and A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints.  Recent films include Final Recourse, Mighty Fine starring Andie MacDowell, Yonkers Joe, Jolene and The Dukes.  He has also directed the HBO series “Oz” (episode, “Unnatural Disasters”), Showtime’s “Women vs.Men” and the feature film Noel, starring Susan Sarandon, Penelope Cruz, Robin Williams and Paul Walker. He appeared on the New York stage in the play The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui starring with Al Pacino, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi and Billy Crudup. Chazz is a member of the Actors Studio in NYC.

  • The Tragedy of King Richard the Second

    Simon Russell Beale plays William Shakespeare’s Richard II, broadcast live from the stage of the Almeida Theatre in London. This visceral new production about the limits of power will be directed by Joe Hill-Gibbins, whose previous plays include Little Revolution at the Almeida and Absolute Hell at the National Theatre.

    Richard II, King of England, is irresponsible, foolish and vain. His weak leadership sends his kingdom into disarray and his court into uproar. Seeing no other option but to seize power, the ambitious Bolingbroke challenges the throne and the king’s divine right to rule. Simon Russell Beale returns to National Theatre Live screens following broadcasts of Timon of Athens and King Lear, and his recent role in the National Theatre’s critically acclaimed production of The Lehman Trilogy.
