This exhibit examines the empty homes and foreclosed dreams littering the American landscape in the wake of the foreclosure crisis. After a house is foreclosed upon there is a fleeting moment when the ghosts of the one-time owners are all that is left – before the houses are cleaned and returned to the real estate market. The photographs in this exhibit capture the remaining signs of life that once filled these emptied houses bringing to light ideas about home, family and the American Dream. Established printmaker and painter, New Jersey native Anthony Migliaccio has been exhibiting his work since the 1970’s. Today his paintings and prints are in collections internationally, and his painting excursions have taken him to scenic locations throughout the world. His work has been exhibited at prestigious venues such as the Salmagundi Club, the National Arts Club, the Noyes Museum, and several galleries, colleges and universities throughout the tri-state area. A group of teenagers leaves the streets of Washington, DC, to participate in an ambitious antiviolence education program in rural West Virginia where they confront the entrenched abuse, violence and neglect cycles of their past. Fly By Light is an intimate exploration of the chaotic, confusing, and emotional journey that follows as they attempt to rewrite their futures. There will be a Q&A with director Ellie Walton following the screening.

The Legend of Love is one of Russian master Yuri Grigorovich’s earliest choreographic works, and its storyline explores the conflict between love and duty through its two heroines.
A University-wide production of the classic Pulitzer-Prize winning play by Thornton Wilder, Our Town tells the universal story of small town America. Though taking place in the first decade of the 20th century and written in 1938, Our Town has consistently been hailed as a theatrical masterpiece. A New York production won the Tony Award for best revival in 1989 and an off-Broadway presentation in 2009 won accolades from critics and audiences alike and ran for nearly 3 years. Performed with little scenery and having the character of Stage Manager directly address the audience, Our Town asks us to consider what is important in life. When Emily wants to relive a day in her life, she is told “Choose the least important day of your life; it will be important enough.”

Bridegroom chronicles the story of Shane Bitney Crone and his same-sex partner Thomas, who died in a tragic accident. The story of what happened after his accidental death– of how people without the legal protections of marriage can find themselves completely shut out opens a window onto the issue of marriage equality like no speech or lecture ever will.
Oro Macht Frei tells the story of the Roman Jewish experience of the Nazi occupation of Rome (Sept 1943 – June 1944). Weaving testimony from Roman Jews together with historical research by renowned scholars on the subject (including Susan Zuccotti, Alexander Stille, Liliana Picciotto), OMF seeks to bring the viewer into a personal and relatable reflection of the Holocaust in Italy through the eyes of this unique and historic community. There will be a panel/Q & A following screening.

A life long Red Bank resident, Evelyn Leavens’ work has been shown at City Without Walls, Aljira, Tweeds, Summit Art Center and the Morris State Museum. Leavens book of drawings “Boswells’ Life of Boswell” was published in 1958 and became #2 on The New York Times children’s best seller list. Primarily self taught, she attended the Vermont Studio Center and studied with Malcolm Morley, Archie Rand and Niel Welliver. This exhibition will include works from throughout the artist’s life. Best known for her fiction, Oates’ novels include them, which won the National Book Award; Blonde, a bold reimagining of the inner life of Marilyn Monroe; The Falls, which won the France’s Prix Femina; The Gravedigger’s Daughter and Little Bird of Heaven, each set in upstate New York; and We Were the Mulvaneys, which follows the disintegration of an American family and which became a bestseller after being selected by Oprah’s Book Club. Fellow author John Updike, praises Oates body of work by saying “Iif the phrase ‘woman of letters’ existed, she would be, foremost in this country, entitled to it.”

Southside Johnny & The Poor Fools return to the Pollak Theatre for another riveting evening embarking on a stripped down journey through Johnny Lyon’s eclectic version of the Great American Songbook. Playing a wide range of music from Dylan, Mose Allison, Muddy Waters, NRBQ, Richard Thompson, Emmylou Harris, The Band, George Jones and more, The Poor Fools also dive into some of the Southside’s Asbury Jukes material–revisiting some classics as well as the underperformed deep tracks. In this incarnation, musicians such as Jeff Kazee, John Conte, Tommy Byrnes, and Neal “The Dude” Pawley join Johnny for singing, playing, and having some fun on stage. It will be a loose mix of songs, stories and banter between the musicians and–hopefully–the audience. Opening Act: Bob Burger. All ticket holders will receive a free autographed poster signed by the artists after the show.

The Phantom Tollbooth: Beyond Expectations playfully examines the creation, creators, lasting impact and enduring relevance of one of the most beloved children’s books of our time. Through interviews, animation, and archival imagery, the documentary traces the friendship between author Norton Juster and Pulitzer Prize-winning artist Jules Feiffer. There will be a Q&A with director Hannah Jayanti following the screening.
Folk singer Ani DiFranco melds soul, funk, jazz, electronica and spoken word into her eclectic repertoire, which features the songs “Untouchable Face,” “32 Flavors” and “Wishin’ and Hopin’.” A Grammy-winning songwriter and collaborator, DiFranco has never stopped evolving, experimenting or pushing the limits of what can be said and sung, over the course of more than 20 albums. Her CDs include the live two-disc Living in Clip, the career retrospective Canon and her latest release, ¿Which Side Are You On? Opening the show will be renowned jazz violinist Jenny Scheinman, who has collaborated and played with artists like Norah Jones, Lou Reed, Aretha Franklin, Lucinda Williams and Bono.
This sound installation features a piano-wired based interactive feedback system that turns Rechnitz Hall into a resonating instrument. Room frequencies, wavelengths and the connection points of the strings will create a unique sonic activation of the exhibition space.
Five-time Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Mary Chapin Carpenter will appear at the Pollak Theatre this fall in an intimate, acoustic performance. The tour marks Carpenter’s return to singing both timeless hits and deep cuts from her expansive and beloved 13-album catalog after performing with orchestras in early 2014. Over the course of her career, Carpenter has sold over 13 million records. With hits like “Passionate Kisses” and “He Thinks He’ll Keep Her,” she has won five Grammy Awards (with 15 nominations), two CMA awards and two Academy of Country Music awards for her vocals. Her songs speak to the most personal of life’s details and the most universal. Opening the show will be Tift Merritt.

They will be joined on stage by a cast of artists, including Southside Johnny, Pat Guadagno, Bobby Banderia, Kate Taylor, Bruce Gassman, Frank Puggy DeRosa, Matt Wade, Stringbean Sorenson, Frank Lombardi, Anthony D’Amato, Emily Grove, Nick Foster, Tommy LaBella, Taylor Hope and more, to bring us on a musical journey back in time to the fall of 1976. The plot of this lavish production is loosely based on Théophile Gauthier’s novel Le Roman de la Momie. French choreographer Pierre Lacotte was exclusively commissioned in 2000 by the Bolshoi Theatre to resurrect Marius Petipa’s mighty Egyptian fresco, and he succeeded brilliantly in giving new life to this forgotten masterpiece. With its exotic setting, impressive parades, spectacular variations and crowd scenes, this grand 19th‐century Orientalist fantasy is one of the most remarkable productions in the Bolshoi’s repertoire. The main roles are here danced by Bolshoi principals Svetlana Zakharova, Nina Kaptsova and Ruslan Skvortsov.
