CLONet Workshop

Virtual

The Coastal Lakes Observing Network (CLONet) will host its annual workshop on Tuesday, Nov. 17, from 12-2 p.m. Through the CLONet project, Monmouth University School of Science and Urban Coast Institute (UCI) staff and students partner with municipalities and community groups to organize citizen science efforts dedicated to understanding the causes of environmental problems facing Deal Lake, Fletcher Lake, Lake Como, Lake Takanassee, Spring Lake, Silver Lake, Sunset Lake, Sylvan Lake, Wesley Lake and Wreck Pond.

The workshop is an opportunity for CLONet volunteers to share their experiences with fellow citizen scientists and find out what the water quality sampling data they’ve collected to date reveals. New individuals and groups interested in volunteering are welcome to attend.

Lauren K. Woods Theatre

The play is set in the backyard of two adjoining houses in the working class neighborhood of South Philadelphia. They are about to celebrate the 21st birthday of Francis Geminiani, a Harvard student, when two classmate friends from Harvard and Yale, Judith and Randy, show up unexpectedly. Since there isn’t a spare bedroom in either house they pitch a tent in the backyard. Francis’ classmates, the wealthy Judith seeks romance with Francis not realizing that her brother Randy is the object of Francis’ unexpressed affection. Each of the characters in the play are dysfunctional to some degree and their celebration of Francis’ birthday brings out the best of comedy and drama. The birthday party is a series of comic incidents that provide laughter and serious realizations that lead up to the final joyous ending. The crazy fast moving celebration leaves each character a bit wiser and happier having celebrated Francis’ 21st birthday.

Tickets: $20 (adults); $15 (seniors)

The Interface Between Marine Biology and Creative Microscopic Inhabitants of the Sea

Virtual

Before the advent of microscopic photography, it fell to the varying artistic skills of scientists to show the world what the invisible plants and animals in our oceans looked like. One of the most prolific and talented was Ernst Haeckel, an 1800s German zoologist and marine biologist whose groundbreaking sketches of organisms such as zooplankton, diatoms and copepods continue to capture the imagination of science enthusiasts and artists to this day. Count among them Monmouth University Professor Pat Cresson, who recently created over 50 works highlighting both microscopic marine organisms and larger sea creatures. Cresson will present her collection, The Interface Between Marine Biology and Creative Microscopic Inhabitants of the Sea, in a free public webinar on Nov. 18. The session is being offered as part of the Department of History & Anthropology’s Research and Teaching Pedagogy Seminar Series

To register, please email Dr. Geoff Fouad at gfouad@monmouth.edu. A Zoom link will be sent upon registration.
