Event Series CANCELLED – Gemini

CANCELLED – Gemini

Lauren K. Woods Theatre

The play is set in the backyard of two adjoining houses in the working class neighborhood of South Philadelphia. They are about to celebrate the 21st birthday of Francis Geminiani, a Harvard student, when two classmate friends from Harvard and Yale, Judith and Randy, show up unexpectedly. Since there isn’t a spare bedroom in either house they pitch a tent in the backyard. Francis’ classmates, the wealthy Judith seeks romance with Francis not realizing that her brother Randy is the object of Francis’ unexpressed affection. Each of the characters in the play are dysfunctional to some degree and their celebration of Francis’ birthday brings out the best of comedy and drama. The birthday party is a series of comic incidents that provide laughter and serious realizations that lead up to the final joyous ending. The crazy fast moving celebration leaves each character a bit wiser and happier having celebrated Francis’ 21st birthday.

Tickets: $20 (adults); $15 (seniors)

A.J. Croce – Livestream Series

Virtual

We are proud to partner with A.J. Croce  to bring you access to a special livestream series! A portion of each ticket sold benefits Monmouth University Center for the Arts. The album release show on Thursday March 18 celebrates the release of the new A.J. Croce studio album By Request available on CD and LP for pre-order today and out on February 5 via Compass Records. The album was born of memories—of favorite artists and shows, but mostly, of late-night gatherings with groups of friends, many of them fellow musicians, with Croce at the piano taking requests. On Thursday March 25 A.J. Croce brings his touring band to the stage with him to perform music from his en studio albums of roots music ranging from Blues and Jazz to Rock and Roll and Soul, including covers from the new album. This performance will include a variety of originals from albums like That’s Me in the Bar, Twelve Tales, and Just Like Medicine.

Streaming Packages start at $15 for one show and $25 for both shows (Merchandise Add-Ons Available)

Virtual Tuesday Night Book Club: Rebecca Skloot’s The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

Virtual

Join us for Tuesday Night Book Club! Hosted by Monmouth University’s Ken Womack and Michael Thomas, each month we’ll explore a different novel. All you have to do is Zoom in and join the discussion! This month’s novel is Rebecca Skloot’s The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells—taken without her knowledge—became one of the most important tools in medicine: The first “immortal” human cells grown in culture, which are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than sixty years
As Rebecca Skloot so brilliantly shows, the story of the Lacks family—past and present—is inextricably connected to the dark history of experimentation on African Americans, the birth of bioethics, and the legal battles over whether we control the stuff we are made of.

Free and open to the public, but registration is required
