Hispanic Heritage Month

Each year, Monmouth University observes National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of those whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. Join the Hispanic Heritage Month Planning Committee for our month-long virtual event series including critical dialogues, performances, scholarship, and speakers including legendary labor rights organizer and feminist activist Dolores Huerta (president and founder of the Dolores Huerta Foundation).

Adult Education Series: Understanding Popular Music

This three-session virtual course provides attendees with a multimedia introduction to popular music’s history and various forms. Students will enjoy engaging, wide-ranging discussion about the soundtrack of our lives and its past, present, and future. Instructor: Ken Womack, Monmouth University Professor of English and Popular Music, as well as the author of numerous books about the Beatles.

$50 (for three sessions)

Virtual Tuesday Night Book Club: Madeline Miller’s Circe

Join us for Tuesday Night Book Club! Hosted by Monmouth University’s Ken Womack and Michael Thomas, each month we’ll explore a different novel. All you have to do is Zoom in and join the discussion!

This month’s novel is Madeline Miller’s Circe and book club will be guest hosted by Rupa DasGupta, artist and former Monmouth Adjunct Professor. With unforgettably vivid characters, mesmerizing language, and page-turning suspense, Circe is a triumph of storytelling, an intoxicating epic of family rivalry, palace intrigue, love and loss, as well as a celebration of indomitable female strength in a man’s world. We have decided to continue with Record Club in virtual format using the ZOOM app. When you register you will be provided the meeting link to join the conversation. It’s just like book club but with albums! With new advances in technology, the way we consume music through our devices, apps and on demand streaming services like Pandora, Spotify and iTunes is making the idea of the “album” as an art form extinct. Get together with other music enthusiasts on Tuesday nights to discuss some of the greatest records of all-time! Listen to the album beforehand and then come prepared to discuss. This event will feature Joni Mitchell: Blue.
