Aging and the Lived Experiences of Transgender and Gender Non-conforming (T/GNC) Older Adults: Narratives through Art

Pollak Gallery

As told in their own voices through art and film this juried exhibit seeks to share some of the diverse lived experiences of transgender and gender non-conforming older adults (T/GNC). This  exhibit centers T/GNC individuals’ unique narratives and make their lives visible. The artwork chosen celebrates the strength and resiliency of these individuals while also sharing the painful challenges encountered. The process of living authentically may instill hope and bring joy, but often this process involves losses and pain as well. The purpose is to increase understanding and knowledge of the lives of T/GNC older adults while supporting Monmouth University’s commitment to create an inclusive, affirming, and equitable campus community.

Eileen Sackman: The Elephant in the Room

Rotary Ice House Gallery

The Elephant in the Room calls attention to threatened and endangered animals, encapsulating their expressive nature through emotional representation. By addressing the “elephant in the room” these wood fired portrait-esque pieces bring awareness to species that have been brought to the brink of extinction due to human interference and have been forever impacted by these interactions.

Roots of Rock ’n’ Roll, Part III

Virtual

This three-session virtual course taught by Kit O’Toole explores the question – just what is rock?
The Beatles remain one of rock’s greatest bands, but their roots go beyond Elvis Presley or Buddy Holly. They stretch even further, spanning cultures and genres. This course examines lesser-known inspirations for some of their most well-known songs as well as rock and roll itself. British Music Hall, Blue Beat (predecessor to ska and reggae), swamp pop, the avant garde, and more will be explored In addition to multimedia presentations, class discussion and activities will enable attendees to identify elements of these genres in the Beatles’ music.

$50 (for three sessions)
Event Series CANCELLED – Gemini

CANCELLED – Gemini

Lauren K. Woods Theatre

The play is set in the backyard of two adjoining houses in the working class neighborhood of South Philadelphia. They are about to celebrate the 21st birthday of Francis Geminiani, a Harvard student, when two classmate friends from Harvard and Yale, Judith and Randy, show up unexpectedly. Since there isn’t a spare bedroom in either house they pitch a tent in the backyard. Francis’ classmates, the wealthy Judith seeks romance with Francis not realizing that her brother Randy is the object of Francis’ unexpressed affection. Each of the characters in the play are dysfunctional to some degree and their celebration of Francis’ birthday brings out the best of comedy and drama. The birthday party is a series of comic incidents that provide laughter and serious realizations that lead up to the final joyous ending. The crazy fast moving celebration leaves each character a bit wiser and happier having celebrated Francis’ 21st birthday.

Tickets: $20 (adults); $15 (seniors)
