Visiting Writer: Melissa Febos

Melissa Febos is the author of the critically acclaimed memoir, Whip Smart, whose “electrifying prose and unremitting honesty” Kirkus Reviews said, “expertly captures grace within depravity.” Among other places, she has been featured on NPR’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross, Anderson Cooper Live, CNN, The Atlantic and Tin House online, Guernica, and New York magazine.  Her writing has been published and anthologized widely including in Glamour, Kenyon Review, Post Road, Hunger Mountain, Salon, Dissent, The Brooklyn Rail, New York Times, and the Chronicle of Higher Education Review.  She has taught writing at Purchase College, The New School, NYU, Sarah Lawrence, Utica College, and the Institute of American Indian Arts, among other places, and is currently Assistant Professor of Creative Nonfiction at Monmouth University.

A look at Venus Williams’ victory off the court in her fight for financial equality in the earnings allocated to men vs. women tennis champions. Nine for IX is a series of documentary films which originally aired on ESPN celebrating the 40th anniversary of Title IX, the federal civil rights law that prohibits sex discrimination in education.

Film Screening: Bridegroom & Q/A with Shane Bitney Crone

Bridegroom chronicles the story of Shane Bitney Crone and his same-sex partner Thomas, who died in a tragic accident. The story of what happened after his accidental death– of how people without the legal protections of marriage can find themselves completely shut out opens a window onto the issue of marriage equality like no speech or lecture ever will.

Nine for IX: The 99’ers

Pollak Theatre

A look at the 1999 women’s national soccer team and the impact of their World Cup victory on the sport of soccer and female athletes overall. Nine for IX is a series of documentary films which originally aired on ESPN celebrating the 40th anniversary of Title IX, the federal civil rights law that prohibits sex discrimination in education. Four of the episodes will be screened during the year.

Ani DiFranco

Pollak Theatre

Folk singer Ani DiFranco melds soul, funk, jazz, electronica and spoken word into her eclectic repertoire, which features the songs “Untouchable Face,” “32 Flavors” and “Wishin’ and Hopin’.” A Grammy-winning songwriter and collaborator, DiFranco has never stopped evolving, experimenting or pushing the limits of what can be said and sung, over the course of more than 20 albums. Her CDs include the live two-disc Living in Clip, the career retrospective Canon and her latest release, ¿Which Side Are You On? Opening the show will be renowned jazz violinist Jenny Scheinman, who has collaborated and played with artists like Norah Jones, Lou Reed, Aretha Franklin, Lucinda Williams and Bono.

Mary Chapin Carpenter

Five-time Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Mary Chapin Carpenter will appear at the Pollak Theatre this fall in an intimate, acoustic performance. The tour marks Carpenter’s return to singing both timeless hits and deep cuts from her expansive and beloved 13-album catalog after performing with orchestras in early 2014. Over the course of her career, Carpenter has sold over 13 million records. With hits like “Passionate Kisses” and “He Thinks He’ll Keep Her,” she has won five Grammy Awards (with 15 nominations), two CMA awards and two Academy of Country Music awards for her vocals. Her songs speak to the most personal of life’s details and the most universal. Opening the show will be Tift Merritt.
