Overview, Pre-Law Club
Students interested in the law are also encouraged to get involved in the many student extracurricular activities available at Monmouth. The practice of law is as much about communication and advocacy as it is about the ability to critically “think like a lawyer.” Therefore, student groups that focus on specific social, civic, or political concerns are ideal for students interested in law.
Additionally, the Pre-Law Club is the extracurricular clearinghouse for all information concerning law school for Monmouth students. The club meets regularly during the academic year and has programs specific to each year of your Monmouth experience. Freshmen and sophomores can get information on curricular preparation for law school; juniors are invited to Law School Admission Test (LSAT) workshops; and seniors attend law student panels and law school forums presented both at Monmouth and organized as field trips to nearby metro areas.
Debate Hawks
Monmouth’s nationally renowned debate team, the “Debate Hawks,” provides a crucial grounding in forensics (the art of formal debate) in a professional and collegial yet practical and competitive environment.
Mock Trial and Moot Court Teams
Monmouth students also take part in collegiate intermural mock trial and moot court competitions. In mock trial, students learn the ins and outs of trial procedure, from questioning witnesses to introducing evidence to opening and closing statements. Mock trial tournaments take place in both the fall and the spring through a series of invitational competitions culminating in American Mock Trial Association (AMTA) regional competition in the spring semester.
