Q&A With Lexi

Looking back, what Political Science Department activities outside the classroom had the biggest impact on you and your future career success?

“When reflecting on my time at MU, what stands out the most and has had the greatest impact on me was my involvement in extracurricular activities with the Political Science Department. From the Travel Course in Argentina to summer debate camp in Arizona, my participation in those activities literally and figurately took me places. My experiences with the Debate Team were particularly formative, instilling in me a belief in my capabilities as a thinker, speaker, and leader. Through debate, I learned to think critically on my feet and articulate my thoughts clearly, skills that have served me well since. Overall, debate helped me appreciate the power of language and shaped me into a more confident person.”

What advice would you offer current Political Science Majors?

“Push yourself to try new things! Participating in activities outside of the classroom is not only fun and rewarding, but gives you hands-on experience, helping you discover your passions and interests. Plus, it is an excellent way to meet new people and build lasting relationships that can benefit you personally and professionally in the long run. You want to start early and nurture those connections because they will be there to support you as you grow and pursue your goals. Do not underestimate the power of getting involved – it’s not just about what you do, but who you do it with that can make all the difference.
