Q&A With Kayvon

Looking back, what Political Science Department activities outside the classroom had the biggest impact on you and your future career success?

“Model UN was very impactful to my career. It helped broaden my worldview, and looking back, the experiences and skills learned during the real-time collaboration and drafting exercises in competitions come in handy every day. From political campaigns, to lobbying, to practicing law, I encourage all Monmouth Political Science students to participate in at least one Model UN or debate team competition (even though I did not participate in debate team) as these clubs provide invaluable experiences and provide practical skills necessary to a successful career.”

What advice would you offer current Political Science Majors?

  • Complete an internship every summer. If you have to work while doing unpaid internships – short-term sacrifice for your long-term success.
  • If you are eligible for work-study and unable to complete unpaid internships/unwilling to work simultaneously, seek out on-campus opportunities that are aligned with your career goals that look good on a resume (even if you are only answering phones).
  • Take a public policy/legislation course (if offered).
  • Reach out to alumni in potential careers you are interested in for coffee chats.
  • Professional experiences are valuable.
  • Be involved in the Model UN or Debate Team.
  • Do not wait until your last semester to start applying for jobs.
