Scheduling Appointments

Students can schedule individual appointments by calling 732-571-7517 or stopping into the office.

Availability

Availability is impacted by service demand and varies throughout the academic year. While most initial sessions are scheduled within 3-5 business days of the request, appointment availability is not guaranteed, and there may be a delay during peak utilization times. If a student experiences a mental health emergency before connecting with a counselor, they are to follow the Crisis Intervention protocol below.

Initial appointments

Initial appointments are scheduled for up to 60 minutes. At the conclusion of the initial meeting, treatment options and modalities will be discussed, including whether or not an off-campus provider or physician may better meet counseling needs. If the provider recommends, a future appointment will be discussed and scheduled with the student.

Follow-up sessions

Follow-up sessions, when clinically recommended by CPS, are scheduled with the front desk staff. At the clinical discretion of the provider and when available, follow-up sessions can range between 15, 30, and 45 minutes.

Canceling or Rescheduling

Canceling or Rescheduling appointments can be made by calling 732-571-7517 during regular business hours when MU is open. Active participation in the counseling process is necessary for the counseling progress. If a student misses a scheduled appointment and does not contact in advance, it is the responsibility of the student to reschedule the appointment or inform the provider that there is no longer an interest in receiving services. After two missed appointments within a semester, CPS reserves the right to terminate services and refer students to off-campus support.Arriving 15 or more minutes late without advanced notification will be considered a missed appointment.

Requests for a specific provider or a change of provider

Requests for a specific provider or a change of provider are handled on a case-by-case basis. The goodness of fit between student and provider can vary based on the provider’s clinical orientation, student’s presenting concern(s), and scheduling availability. While CPS intends to schedule students with a provider that will treat them for the duration of the episodic care, not every student is appropriate for every provider, and not every provider is appropriate for every student. If the student would like to request to switch providers, the student can either speak with the current provider or call the CPS office and leave a message for a clinical team member who is not the existing provider to consult about the student’s request. Any change in providers does not reset session counts.
