The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) requires a one-time fee payment for new F-1/J-1 Students and J-1 Scholars. The fee helps cover operational costs of the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), which is a central computerized system that maintains and manages data of international students, exchange visitors, and their dependents during their stay in the United States. The fee is $200 for F-1 students and $180 for J-1 exchange visitors.
Who is required to pay the fee?
Students must have the Form I-20 or DS-2019 before they pay the fee. Although students are able to schedule a visa application interview before they make the SEVIS I-901 fee payment, the fee should be paid at least a few days in advance of the interview date.
Who is not required to pay the fee?
Students can pay the SEVIS fee online at www.fmjfee.com/i901fee/. You will need your SEVIS number to complete the online payment.
When paying online, please make sure to print the receipt directly after the transaction. Students must present the fee payment receipt to the officer at the visa interview and at the port of entry when entering the United States.
