Award-winning Playwright Catherine Filloux to Speak at Monmouth University on February 10

Monmouth University’s School of Social Work presents award-winning playwright Catherine Filloux on Tuesday, February 10, at 5 p.m. in Wilson Hall Auditorium.  The topic of Filloux’s lecture is “The Theatre of Human Rights.” This event is free and open to the public.

Filloux has been writing about human rights and social justice for over 20 years. Her new play, “Selma ’65,” about the civil rights movement and the KKK, opened in October 2014 at La MaMa in New York City, where she is an artist in residence. Filloux recently took part in an overseas reading tour to Sudan and South Sudan that was organized by the University of Iowa’s international writing program. Her play “The Beauty Inside” was produced in northern Iraq in the Kurdish language by ArtRole, in collaboration with Kurdish theater director Gaziza Omer.

Filloux is a co-founder of Theatre Without Borders and has served as a speaker for playwriting and human rights organizations around the world. She is the librettist for three operas, and has been commissioned by the Wiener Staatsoper (Vienna State Opera House) to write the libretto for a new opera, which will premiere in 2019.
