“College Sports: Upon Further Review” Event Set for November 5

Monmouth will host a panel discussion, “College Sports: Upon Further Review,” on November 5 to address the complex issues surrounding commercialism in college athletics. The expert panel will include Monmouth University President Dr. Paul R. Brown, Dan Beebe , founder and principal of the Dan Beebe Group, and Amy Perko , executive director of the Knight Commission, which was formed 1989 in response to more than a decade of highly visible scandals in college sports.

Since his arrival at Monmouth, President Brown has published several op-ed pieces on proposed reforms of the college athletics landscape, which have appeared in The Philadelphia Inquirer and The Star Ledger. Brown has also brought expert speakers to campus, sparking open dialogue about the complex realities of upholding an amateur athletics model within the landscape of Division I sports, while also ensuring that student-athletes remain integral to campus life.

Joining Brown will be Beebe, whose 30-year career in athletics included positions as Commissioner of the Big 12 and Ohio Valley Conferences and NCAA Director of Enforcement, and Perko, who has held various leadership positions in sports for more than 20 years, is a member of the Wake Forest Sports Hall of Fame and was a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-America Basketball Team member.

The event is free and open to the public.  For more information, please contact Chris Tobin, Associate Athletic Director for Communications at 732-261-5180 or ctobin@monmouth.edu.
