Monmouth University’s School of Social Work hosted a fundraiser June 20 as a kickoff of the celebration of its 40th anniversary, which begins in the 2014-2015 academic year.

The event, “ART Take Away for Education,” raised $8,700 for the school’s graduate student scholarship fund, according to a news release.

Over 50 guests attended the event and took home a professionally framed fine-art reproduction or an original piece of art from local artists, as well as from artists from the school’s overseas field internship sites in Vietnam, Chile and Rwanda, according to the release.

“Our first event was a huge success, and I look forward to celebrating our anniversary throughout the year,” said Robin Mama, dean of the School of Social Work in a prepared statement. “Forty years of preparing social workers at either the baccalaureate level, or since 1998, at the graduate level, is quite an accomplishment. I am proud of our alumni and their achievements.”

Monmouth University’s School of Social Work is built around the ideals of advancing human rights and social justice, according to the release. It is ranked as one of the top social work programs in the country by “U.S. News & World Report.” The school offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees in social work, both of which are nationally accredited and recognized.

Students in this program receive hands-on experience in the field and engage in practice at various levels, including working with individuals, groups and communities. Specialty areas of study include school social work, mental health, substance abuse, child welfare, gerontology, community organizing, and grant and policy writing, according to the release.
