GREAT LAWN AT MONMOUTH UNIVERSITY WINS “FIELDS OF EXCELLENCE”

Monmouth University is pleased to announce that the Great Lawn Soccer Field has been selected as a winner of Pioneer Athletics’ 2011 Fields of Excellence Award. Monmouth University employees Kyle Harris, William Byrne, Joseph Lopes, and Terry Palmateer, were recognized for their care, dedication, and superior field management of the Great Lawn field.

The Great Lawn is a unique soccer field and facility. It sits on the grounds of the historic Shadow Lawn Estate by Woodrow Wilson Hall, a national historic landmark. The natural appearance of the Great Lawn is maintained during the off-season, and every August the athletic field grounds crew transforms the Great Lawn into a complete soccer facility. In addition to the scoreboard and light towers, which are permanently installed, bleachers and white vinyl fencing around the perimeter of the field are added. They also set up dugouts for each team and a portable press box. The crew maintains the field as well as the other athletic fields on campus.

The hard work paid off the last three seasons. The Monmouth University Men’s team is nationally ranked and hosted NCAA Division I Tournament First round Games along with NEC Conference Championships in 2009 and 2010. The women’s team has shared in the success, reaching the NCAA tournament in 2009 and was nationally ranked in 2010.
