WOMEN’S SOCCER BATTLES TO 2-2 DRAW IN DOUBLE OVERTIME WITH RIDER
Hoyer and Sands Tally Scores in Tie
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Saturday, September 18, 2004

West Long Branch, N.J. – The Monmouth University women’s soccer team battled to a 2-2 double overtime draw with Rider University, in a steady rain on The Great Lawn, on Saturday afternoon. With the tie, the Hawks’ record stands at 2-3-1 on the season, while the Broncs are 3-1-1.

Rider maintained possession throughout the opening half, generating its first scoring opportunity in the 17th minute when Stephanie West dribbled through space to find Tami Coyle, whose drop pass to Kelli Burke sailed just over the crossbar. Monmouth sophomore Tanya Earl (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) thwarted a Rider opportunity in the 37th minutes as she tracked back to the box and cleared a service, keeping the match scoreless into the half.

Monmouth created two scoring chances of its own to open the second stanza as each Kate Sands (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) and Brittani Heller (Newton, N.J./Newton) missed on scoring chances.

Rider scored first to take a 1-0 lead at 71:01, when Marianne Hanna dribbled into open space to the edge of the 18 and rifled a shot into the far netting past the arms of Monmouth netminder Kim McCarthy (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan).

The Blue and White knotted the score at 1-1 in the 80th minute as a result of Jamie Kuhn’s (Spotswood, N.J./Spotswood) throw in over the defensive pressure that found Sands in space. At pace, Sands delivered a square feed to Amy Hoyer (Trenton, N.J./Northern Burlington), who notched her first score of her career.

Monmouth captured the lead two minutes later when Maureen Masto (Wall, N.J./Wall) fed the ball to Sands, who beat the defenders and drilled a shot into the net for the 2-1 lead at 81:40.

It only took :18 seconds for Rider to tie the match up at 2-2, as the Broncs pushed forward immediately after the restart, when Hanna found herself alone in the box for her second goal of the contest.

Both teams had scoring chances in the overtime sessions, but neither could capitalize, as McCarthy and Rider goalkeeper Kim Carter withstood the pressure.

McCarthy, making her second start of the season, made six saves, while Carter tallied four saves for the Broncs.

Rider owned an 18-10 shot advantage, including 7-0 in the first half.

Monmouth returns to action on Tuesday, September 21 when the Hawks travel to Lehigh University for a 7:00 p.m. match.
