New Jersey State Council on the Arts Visual Arts Fellowship Showcase

This exhibit showcases the work of 2014-2015 New Jersey State Council on the Arts Fellowship winners in sculpture, crafts and photography. Fellowships are highly competitive awards to New Jersey artists in 12 different disciplines, based solely on artistic quality, and designed to help artists produce new work and advance their careers. Fellowship Artists: Betty Beaumont, Jill Gower, Tyler Haughey, Jan Huling, Jerry Hirniak, Johanna Inman, Alec Karros, Christina Labey, Scott Pellnat, Edward Peters, Lisa Sanders, Roger Sayre, Karina Skvirsky, Pamela Sunday, Christina Tenaglia and Wendel White The Visual Arts Fellowship Showcase is a cosponsored program between the New Jersey State Council on the Arts and the Monmouth University Center for the Arts.

Experience the village of Mbiriizi in Uganda, Africa. This exhibit tracks the progress of the Mbiriizi Advanced Primary School and its children over the last 12 years. It celebrates their lives through pictures, stories, crafts, batiks and artifacts. See the growth made possible through one woman’s determination to make a difference. The richness and beauty of the culture (as well as its poverty) is shared through audio clips from travelers who have visited and experienced the school. It is an exhibit of joy, of determination, of success, of life.

Bruce Springsteen: A Photographic Journey, a traveling photography exhibition curated by the GRAMMY Museum Los Angeles, features 45 iconic images. The opening reception on September 27 from 1-4 PM will include a Q&A with the photographers moderated by Grammy Museum Executive Director Bob Santelli at 2:30 PM.

Aaron Wexler’s work investigates shapes in nature as they relate to abstraction in painting. He collects distinctly different representations of abstraction of nature and architectural networks and utilizing prints, books, photographs and hand painted paper, makes drawings and collages from these source materials. Wexler received his M.F.A from the School of The Art Institute of Chicago in 1999. His work has been included in various solo and group shows in New York and London including the Morgan Lehman Gallery, Josee Bienvenu Gallery, The National Academy Museum, and Katonah Museum of Art, among others.

James Deane: A Hidden Treasure

This exhibit will feature recently discovered artwork by artistic visionary James Deane a life-long resident of Long Branch (1906 – 2001.) Prolific in many mediums, Deane created works of art with watercolors, pen and ink, pencil and clay. He was supported by his only sibling, his sister Laura, which allowed him the freedom to focus exclusively on his artwork for many years. The works featured in this exhibit include magnificent botanical studies, futuristic landscape paintings and whimsical pottery, most of which has been unseen since the 1930’s.

When Textiles Talk. A Quilting Exhibit

This juried exhibition includes quilts from members of Rebecca’s Reel Quilt Guild in Middletown and the Beach Plum Quiltmakers of Ocean County. Historically, quilts have been made to convey emotions, record events and to evoke memories; to greet or say good-bye; to sell or raffle for charity; to celebrate, to commemorate or to comfort. The need to communicate requires quilters to express themselves for the same various reasons as other artists. Each quilt in this exhibit is accompanied by a story card explaining the artist’s vision or motivation. Opening Reception: Aug 1 | 5 - 7 PM

Sinatra: A Photo Exhibit 

Pollak Gallery - 10 AM

The photo exhibit features 38 framed images spanning Sinatra’s boyhood days in Hoboken to his final performances in the 1990s. Included are rare and classic images from inside Sinatra’s Capitol Studios recording sessions, at home, at New Jersey’s Rustic Cabin roadhouse, on the road with the Hoboken Four, the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, and, of course, Sinatra’s solo career. Photographers include Ken Veeder, Sid Avery, and the legendary Herman Leonard, among others.

Monmouth University Library, Seminar Room 102 Opening Reception: April 21 4:30 p.m. The exhibition features a selection of 12 pieces. All works are from Monmouth University’s extensive collection of Jacob Landau’s work, comprising over 300 prints, drawings and paintings. The collection was gifted to Monmouth University in 2008 by the Jacob Landau Institute of Roosevelt, NJ. This exhibit is co-sponsored by the Jewish Culture Studies Program and the Honors School of Monmouth University.
